Title: Evaluation of In Vitro Free Radical Scavenging Efficacy of Aerial Parts of Medicinally Important Morinda pubescens J.E. Smith (Morinda tinctoria Roxb.)
Keywords: Morinda tinctoria
free radical scavenging activity
DPPH

Description: The present study evaluated the anti-oxidant efficacy of methanolic, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of Morinda tinctoria aerial parts using catechin as a standard antioxidant. The free radical scavenging activity of the extracts was evaluated according to the procedure described by Nickavar et al. (2006) [1] using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The methanolic extract of M. tinctoria showed IC50 with minimum concentration of 180μg/ml and more effective in scavenging DPPH followed by ethylacetate extract and chloroform extract with concentrations of 200μg/ml and 250μg/ml respectively. The present results suggest that the extracts of M. tinctoria aerial parts have radical scavenging activity and can be recommended as potent antioxidants. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the aerial parts revealed the presence of saponins, terpenoids, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides and sugars.
