Angiogenesis, sprouting of blood capillaries has become a focus of intense research. Numerous bioactive chemical compoundsof plant origin may influence angiogenic activity by the influence of blood vessel formation. Pterocarpus santalinus is describedin the Ayurveda for its wide spectrum of medicinal properties. In the present work, angiogenic potential of acetone, alcohol andbenzene extract of Pterocarpus santalinus was evaluated by the chick chorioallantoic membrane assay macroscopically andmicroscopically. The stem bark was shed dried and extracted with acetone, alcohol and benzene. The crude extract was testedat 48, 72 and 96 hrs of incubation; where it stimulated in vivo angiogenesis specifically at late hrs of treatment studied to anextent comparable to that observed with normal, sham control and HBSS treated control CAMs. These extracts also stimulatedCAM development through an increase in diameter and area of the CAM. This angiogenic effect of P. santalinus seems to bemediated by direct proliferative effects on endothelial cells with cell migration causing significant stimulation withoutdisplaying any toxicity. Our study indicates that acetone extract of Pterocarpus santalinus containing phytoconstituents thatstimulate CAM development and angiogenesis in chick CAM model.-
