dc.description	We discuss the status of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The construction of the southern site in Argentina has started a year and a half ago. The project is in its first phase which consists in the construction and running of the so-called engineering array, a prototype of the experiment. The goals, design and construction of the observatory are discussed.	-
