Issue Date: 1-Jun-2013
Publisher: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - Instituto de Ciencias de la Construccion Eduardo Torroja
Description: The new railway station at Castellon is located on the main line running down Spain’s Mediterranean coast on a stretch of almost 5 kilometres of track that has been placed underground in a tunnel in order to allow for the redevelopment the western edge of the city. The singularity of the station lies in the fact that it is placed in a large cutting that has been opened up above the lines thus breaking the monotony of the tunnel and allowing natural light lo illuminate the platforms which themselves can be seen from street level. A large boat-like structure covers the cutting resembling a Mediterranean market, a covered area that accommodates the concourse, public spaces and the transverse communications platform between the railway platforms at an intermediate leve1 between those and street level. The outstanding elements in the design of the station are the large full bore beams of variable section which describe the curvature of the glass roof and the infernal covering/lining of the boat, the concrete wall screens projecting from the service buildings, above those that these are supported by, and the southern station main entrance, walls of white concrete.
