| dc.description | For many a resident of coastal cities or villages, thelighthouse is the very image of their childhood, a fondmemory of times past. And many a light post has marked anddefined the land over which it towers... landscapes changedby human hands, imbued by that change with a distinctpersonality.<br>Machichaco, Cabo Mayor at Santander, Peñas, Hércules atLa Coruña, Chipiona, the “Farol” in Cádiz, Trafalgar, the“Farola” in Málaga, Porto Pí, Maspalomas, … all arelandmarks that represent far more than their mere purpose asa beaming guide.<br>“Tower or other building eequipped to guide navigtors bymeans of a powerful light that gives a continuous orinterrupted signal” is Webster’s definition of lighthouse. But amore precise description might be: “Permanent light signallocated high over the coast, that warns of danger in the darkor charts a course for navigators”. And as such, these arestructures intended for a recent use, barely three centuries old.<br><br>¿Para cuántos habitantes de ciudades o aldeas de la costa elfaro ha sido imagen de infancia y memoria de otros buenostiempos ya pasados? ¿Cuántas torres de luz han marcado ydefinido el territorio sobre el que se asientan?; paisajestransformados por la mano del hombre que les ha dado uncarácter único.<br>Machichaco, Cabo Mayor en Santander, Peñas, Hércules enLa Coruña, Chipiona, el Farol de Cádiz, Trafalgar, la Farolade Málaga, Porto Pí, Maspalomas, … son hitos, quetranscienden más allá de su mera funcionalidad como señalluminosa.<br>“Torre alta en la costa con luz en la parte superior, para quedurante la noche sirva de señal y aviso a los navegantes”.Así define el faro el Diccionario de la Real Academia de laLengua Española. Pero quizá, esta otra sea más precisa:“Señal luminosa permanente situada en alto sobre la costa,que indica en la oscuridad un peligro o marca un derrotero alos navegantes”, y, como tal, es una construcción deutilización reciente; tiene apenas tres siglos. | - |
