| Description: | Spending time in a German speaking country may aid in vocabulary acquisition and production. This study hypothesized a concrete link between written language use and experiences abroad. Intermediate German students’ vocabulary uses in impromptu essays were evaluated by counting the number of total word, unique words, and content words. This data was used to calculate the Lexical Variation and the Lexical Density. The Lexical Variation and Lexical Density of students with varying time in German speaking countries were compared. No strong correlation between time spent abroad and more advanced written vocabulary use, higher Lexical Variation and Lexical Density, was found. However, these ambiguous findings reinforce the difficulty of quantifying vocabulary acquisition and studying abroad. |
