| Description: | The wooden ship Atlantic was built in 1849 at Newport (now Marine City), Michigan. The fast ship made the crossing from Buffalo, New York to Detroit, Michigan in record time - 16 1/2 hours. The Atlantic collided with the Ogdensburg near Long Point in Lake Erie during the night of August 20, 1852. The Atlantic sank. the Ogdensburg rescued about 250 Atlantic passengers, but 131 people died in the accident. |
